So Ghetto

Description:
My recent body of work attempts to show the ugly truth about most mainstream Hip Hop culture. When one examines the programming of BET and/or MTV, or listens carefully to any Hip Hop radio station, it’s clear that the minstrel shows from the 1830s are alive and well. The black make-up, red mouths, and banjoes have all been replaced with over size jewelry, drugs, woman, material things and rapping. The “New Black Face” series of paintings and drawings are informed by an interview between Rhymefest and DJ Winta, in which Rhymefest stated that grillz “…are the new black face”. The series is also informed by Byron Hurt’s film “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes.”
