FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Transcending History: Moving Beyond the Legacy of Slavery and the Holocaust

Philadelphia, PA - With over 30 international artists and over 50 works of art to display, the Idea Coalition presents an art exhibit like no other, through a fusion of Black and Jewish art exploring the common histories and struggles of these two communities. Transcending History will highlight the progressive attitudes and resilience of these two communities while visually presenting challenges that they face every day.  What does moving beyond the legacy really mean?  How can these two communities work together to improve the lives of people in Philadelphia and beyond?

The Idea Coalition is a group of successful Black and Jewish young professionals in Philadelphia with two goals in mind: (1) bringing together the Black and Jewish communities in Philadelphia and beyond, and (2) making Philadelphia a better place to live, work and play. The Idea Coalition will accomplish these goals through initiatives focusing on common interests                                             such as arts and education (among others).

The Opening Event for this month-long nationally recognized juried exhibition will be February 4, 2010 from 6 pm-9 pm at Vivant Art Collection at 60 North 2nd Street in the Old City section of Philadelphia (gallery owner Florcy Morisset is chair of the Idea Coalition’s Arts Initiative).  With support from Zahav restaurant and in partnership with the Philadelphia Black Public Relations Society, 50% of the proceeds from the evening and throughout the month will go to Haiti relief efforts.  The other 50% of proceeds will be used to fund Idea Coalition initiatives such as the Idea Arts Initiative and the ongoing Idea Education Initiative.

The Idea Coalition’s Education Initiative is currently in the middle of its first year-long project at Crossan Elementary School in Northeast Philadelphia.  Members of the Idea Coalition have conducted classroom visits speaking with children about their careers, backgrounds and successes.
Be a part of history and artistic social change and help make Philadelphia a better place!
